2009-06-14 Green River Century This scenic, hilly century ride leaves out of Kentucky's Campbellsville University and tours the Green River, then continues to the north. Ride Captain, Jim "Grizzly" Moore did a fine job of putting a low-traffic route together with plenty of shady creek bottom roads, challenging climbs, gorgeous overlooks and an excellent cue sheet to find our way. |

2009-04-05 General Butler's Assault General Butler's Assault is a tough 102 Mile "Century Ride" with over 7,000 feet of climbing. The ride gets its name from the steep hill we "assault" in General Butler State Park, Carrollton, KY. This year, the ride was held early in the season, before proper condidtioning could be aquired, thus making the ride all the tougher. Thirty-Five hardy riders showed up including young Ben Meredith and his Dad Steve, riding a tandem. Ben was only 14 but did a fine job completing the Century Ride. |

2007-05-08 Carefree Century 29 riders showed up in Carefree, IN to explore the hills of the Hoosier National Forest and see a different perspective of the Ohio River. Many of the usual suspects were there, but we were also joined by a former Louisvillian, Ron, visiting from his current home in Florida, and Sam, down from Chicago to ride with the Mad Dogs again. Less than four miles into the route, we turned a sharp corner on Fredonia Rd. and were greeted with the first of many stunning river vistas of the Ohio far below glimmering in the early morning sun. We passed thru the small community of Fredonia, skirted Artist Point and Cape Sandy before descending into the often flooded town of Alton at mile 12, where the Little Blue joins the Ohio. Multiple shouts of "Bridge!" stopped the peloton for a dismount and walk across the soon-to-be-replaced Alton Bridge with its widely separated and partially missing wooden planks. Even with the caution, the bridge appeared to take at least one flat as its toll. |

2007-08-12 Bridge-Memorial Ride Bridge to a Bicycle Friendly Louisville - Chips Cronen Memorial Ride. This was a ride of remembrance for George "Chips" Cronen, an experienced cyclist who was struck and killed on the 2nd street bridge while commuting home from work July 3. Chips was following all the rules of the road, the motorist was distracted and failed to see. More than 2,000 cyclists rode across the Clark Memorial Bridge to mark the opening with new shared usage signage and road markings, "Sharrows." Chips' family, along with Mayor Jerry Abramson were in attendance to help Chips' brother-in-law, Ed Tonini, commemorate the event. |

"One Day, One Way, 160 Miles!" RAIN is an annual ride across the State of Indiana sponsored by the Bloomington Bicycle Club. Its 160-mile length runs mostly on the Historic National Route 40, an older divided four-lane road with light traffic. It has gentle rolling hills. 2007 was my fifth year for riding RAIN and Tom's fourth. There were a more than a dozen participants from all around Louisville joining the 1,185 who rode. A number of the "Mad Dogs" participated. Some even did the ride fixed gear! Amazing! A few folks chose to ride straight through, treating the ride essentially as a Time Trial. They turned in some great overall times for the ride. However, most of us took advantage of the SAG stops with great food, drink and a party atmosphere. It was also the year for our personal bests. Tom and I stayed mostly together for the ride, working as team. Great weather and a gradually building tailwind combined with better cycling fitness to give us a comfortable and speedy RAIN ride with an average of 21.3 mph. Of course, we still took our breaks at the SAG stops. We soaked up some happy memories for the day. Now you can see some sights and sounds from one of the more challenging annual rides in this region. Enjoy! |

2006-08-13 Sink or Swim Century First of all, don't let the name scare you -- The name "Sink or Swim" doesn't mean it's a real killer of a century. 2006-06-11 Medora Century A sizeable group arrived at the Clark Forest for a 100 mile jaunt through the forest, through Scott, Jackson and Washington Counties to Medora, Indiana and back. Melissa "Puddle" Hall was truly in her element as ride captain. It rained off and on for a good part of the morning--That's just the kind of weather Puddle likes! I returned to century riding after a bad ankle break in April. Did you miss me? |
